Contaminated sites legislation places a potentially substantial burden on landowners. Many property transactions and developments include environmental compliance obligations for potentially contaminated soils.

Soil or Groundwater Contamination, pollution and spills on Contaminated Sites may be caused by:

Fuels, oils and greases that may infiltrate the soil causing land contamination.
Heavy metals – these are often associated with lead (TEL and TML) that was previously a petroleum additive.
Asbestos at levels which exceed the Contaminated Sites guidelines (Guidelines for the Assessment, Remediation and Management of Asbestos-Contaminated Sites in Western Australia May 2009)
Paints, glues, chemicals and solvents from industrial processes
Hazardous wastes which can cause soil contamination. These can include organic and putrescible effluents.
