Move to the Country?
We work with some of the most experienced dieback interpreters in WA, and there is currently an opening for a keen, fit, observant and energetic person to work in the Jarrah forest and coastal plain areas assisting these interpreters, and to learn dieback interpretation with the possible aim of making a career of being an accredited interpreter.
It would involve working in rural areas, often in the southwest of WA, and it may be an advantage to live in (or move to) the Manjimup area.
Manjimup is a town of over 5000 people with a population of over 10,000 within the Manjimup Shire. The town is located just over 3.5 hours travel south from Perth, (1.5 hours from Bunbury) on the South West Highway, 30 minutes south of Bridgetown and has recently been named as one of the super towns, which means it will have a significant amount of funding by the government in the next few years, with this they are planning on developing a larger airport that can support large aircraft for fly in fly out to the mines in the north, this is to encourage an increase in population. It already is reasonably well catered for with shops for a town its size, with Coles, Woolworths and Target being the major shops. The Manjimup shire is the largest in the south west and covers over 7000 square Km’s (700,000 ha) of which over 85% is forested. So when you work in the bush, it is frequent that you go the day without seeing or hearing anything other than the birds and animals in the forest. The town itself is 60km’s (direct) from the coast, much of the coast being only accessible by 4×4 and contains vast beaches popular for fishing and surfing. There are large variations in forest types, the majority consisting of tall karri and jarrah forest, with variations in annual rainfall of between 700mm in the eastern part to 1400mm near the coast (as a comparison Perth is 900mm). Pemberton is within the shire and although smaller, is better known (it being a tourist town) and is only a little over 30 minutes drive south from Manjimup.
The most scenic areas of Manjimup are just outside of the town, as the town itself is built mostly on a flat area, whereas most of the surrounding areas consist of rolling hills and deep valleys, many of which contain vast irrigation dams for use in agriculture such as various types of orchards, vineyards, vegetable growing, dairy farming and aquaculture.
An average 3×1 house in Manjimup is sold for 250 to 300 thousand dollars, with rent for a similar house, between 220 and 250 dollars per week.
