WETLAND MANAGEMENT

Wetland Condition Assessment is undertaken to determine if a wetland’s condition meets the category assigned to it under DEC’s Geomorphic Wetlands Dataset. It involves assessing aspects such as biodiversity, habitats and vegetation condition.

Wetlands are categorised under DEC’s Geomorphic Wetlands Dataset as:

Multiple Use Wetland
Resource Enhancing Wetland and
Conservation Category Wetland.
RAMSAR wetlands are defined under the multilateral RAMSAR treaty.

Boundary Assessment involves testing and ground-truthing the DEC’s wetland mapping, and is an important part of an approvals and compliance process prior to land development, purchase, soil disturbance etc.

Wetland Management involves identifying threatening processes that are presently or have the potential to impact on the values of the wetland such as weeds, contamination, feral animals or habitat fragmentation. Once the threats and their impacts have been identified, management strategies can be developed to mitigate the threats and rehabilitate the affected wetland values.
