CONSERVATION MANAGEMENT PLANS
The Department of Environment and Conservation released the Draft Guidelines for Conservation Management Plans on DEC Managed Lands (DEC 2010). The purpose of a CMP is “to provide a preliminary framework to adequately limit changes to ecological and landscape processes that could result in the unacceptable diminishment of values, for which lands in the conservation estate are managed” (DEC, 2010).
A CMP is to provide adequate information in relation to conservation values within the project area, potential environmental impacts and proposed management of an exploration program so as to avoid, minimise and mitigate these impacts. Typically CMPs address the following:
- Potential impacts to ecological and landscape processes, as a result of the following:
- Introduction and spread of exotic species (weeds and feral animals)
- Introduction and spread of plant pathogens (e.g. Phytophthora dieback)
- Habitat modification due to poor rehabilitation
- Alteration of surface or subsurface water flows which can have both direct and indirect impacts on habitats
- Soil destabilisation and erosion
- Uncontrolled fires (originating from campfires, machinery etc)
- Site contamination (including from hydrocarbon, chemicals, litter and drilling wastes)
Dinglebird Environmental produces CMPs for mining and exploration clients conforming to DEC’s guidelines. Please call 9433 6822 to discuss your CMP requirements.
